How KCSE Grading Works

Your KCSE mean grade is calculated from your best 7 subjects: 3 compulsory subjects (English, Kiswahili, Mathematics) plus your best 4 optional subjects. Each grade is assigned points from A=12 to E=1, and your mean is the average of these 7 subjects. After calculating your mean grade, use our cluster points calculator to find your weighted points for specific university courses.

How KCSE Mean Grade is Calculated

Step-by-Step Calculation

  1. Enter grades for all your subjects (minimum 7 required). Track your university GPA later.
  2. The system selects your 3 compulsory subjects: English, Kiswahili, and Mathematics
  3. From your remaining subjects, it picks the 4 best grades
  4. Each grade is converted to points (A=12, A-=11, ... E=1)
  5. Total points of best 7 subjects are summed (maximum 84)
  6. Mean points = Total Points ÷ 7
  7. Mean grade is determined from mean points

Example Calculation

Student's Grades:

  • English: B+ (10 points)
  • Kiswahili: B (9 points)
  • Mathematics: B- (8 points)
  • Biology: A- (11 points)
  • Chemistry: B+ (10 points)
  • Geography: B (9 points)
  • CRE: B- (8 points)

Total Points: 10+9+8+11+10+9+8 = 65/84

Mean Points: 65 ÷ 7 = 9.29

Mean Grade: B (9.0 - 9.5 range)

However, many competitive courses require higher grades:

  • Medicine: Typically A- or above (aggregate 74+)
  • Law: B+ or above (aggregate 70+)
  • Engineering: B+ or above with strong Math and Physics
  • Education: C+ minimum

Private universities may admit students with grades as low as C or C- for some diploma and certificate programs. Use our cluster points calculator to check eligibility for specific courses.

How many subjects are needed for KCSE?

Students must take a minimum of 7 subjects and a maximum of 8 subjects in KCSE:

  • 3 Compulsory subjects: English (101), Kiswahili (102), Mathematics (121)
  • 2 Sciences: Choose from Biology, Physics, Chemistry
  • 1 Humanity: Choose from History, Geography, CRE, IRE, HRE

  • Bridging Courses: Some institutions offer bridging programs that can qualify you for university admission
  • Resit KCSE: You can register as a private candidate to improve your grades
  • Alternative Qualifications: Consider pursuing recognized certifications like CPA, CPS, or craft courses
What is the difference between mean grade and cluster points?

Mean Grade and Cluster Points are two different measures:

Mean Grade

  • • Average of your best 7 subjects
  • • General performance indicator
  • • Expressed as letter grade (A to E)
  • • Maximum 84 points (12 × 7)

Cluster Points

  • • Weighted scores for specific courses
  • • Different subjects have different weights
  • • Course-specific calculation
  • • Maximum 48 points

Use our Cluster Points Calculator to calculate your cluster points for specific courses.

Important Information
