Understanding BMI (Body Mass Index)
What is BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]². According to the CDC, BMI is used to categorize individuals into weight categories that may lead to health problems. The World Health Organization recognizes BMI as a useful screening tool for weight categories.
BMI Categories (WHO)
- Under 18.5:Underweight
- 18.5 - 24.9:Normal weight
- 25.0 - 29.9:Overweight
- 30.0 - 34.9:Obese Class I
- 35.0 - 39.9:Obese Class II
- 40.0 and above:Obese Class III
Important Notes
BMI Limitations
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat mass. Athletes and bodybuilders may have high BMI due to muscle mass, not excess fat. As noted by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, BMI also doesn't account for age, gender, or body composition differences.
When to See a Doctor
Consult a healthcare provider if your BMI is outside the normal range, or if you have concerns about your weight. The Mayo Clinic recommends additional assessments like body fat percentage, waist circumference, and other health markers.
Other Health Indicators
Consider other metrics like waist-to-hip ratio, body fat percentage, muscle mass, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood sugar for a complete health picture.
